Called Noah Basketball, the black box system measures the degree of a player's arc and broadcasts the number after a shot. It's a feature that women's coach Brian Neal pushed for and helped explain at Thursday's Basketball 101 for Women.

Neal said the ideal arc is 45 degrees and the device makes players concentrate on their form. It's most effective from the free-throw line and top of the key.

Coach Chris Mack said men's players have used Noah in individual workouts.

"Unless they're extreme, I'm really talking about the arc, they're really hard to see. Unless you’re talking about an extreme arc or a really, really flat shot. They say that the optimal arc is 45 degrees and then the depth at which the ball enters the rim, and so I think 12 to 15 inches back from the front of the rim is where you want to sort of hit your target. The only thing the player really sees is left or right. So certainly you can see short but it's hard to intuitively correct that unless you can sort of put a number to that," Mack said.
